We are a global leader in the field of research and clinical trials. By focusing resources in new areas we have delivered numerous leading treatments in many therapeutic arenas including: respiratory, cardiovascular, virology, central nervous system, immunology and metabolic disease.

We also have a strong presence in the over-the-counter (OTC) sector. Our latest medicine treats the urinary symptoms related to an enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), a condition that affects 1 in 4 men over the age of 40 in the UK.

For animals, we provide medicines for the treatment of arthritis and heart disease in small animals and for the prevention of disease in farm animals.

We have always been at the cutting edge of research and the development. In 1927, one of our chemists was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the structure of bile acids and on the oxidation reactions occurring in live tissue. Today, this dedication to pioneering research continues. More than 6,000 people work in research and development. We invest 24% of net sales from our Prescription Medicine business into this sector, resulting in a very healthy product pipeline.

We have seven research and development centres worldwide, the largest of which is in Biberach, Germany. This production facility manufactures innovative biopharmaceuticals and represents one of the largest single investments for our company (over €300 million).

In January 2011 we signed a global agreement with Eli Lilly and Company to jointly develop and commercialize a portfolio of diabetes compounds currently in mid- and late-stage development. The alliance will leverage the collective scientific expertise and business capabilities of two leading research-driven pharmaceutical companies to address patient needs arising from the growing global diabetes epidemic.

In the UK, the Clinical Trial Group coordinates and manages many of the worldwide clinical developmental programmes, while the UK based Biometry & Data Management Group acts as a global data centre for some of Boehringer Ingelheim’s large multinational clinical outcome studies.
