Community Spirit is Boehringer Ingelheim's corporate social responsibility initiative. By working with organisations and charities close to our hearts the Community Spirit program has helped to improve lives around the UK. The program also raises awareness of local needs and subsequently promotes social inclusion of vulnerable groups. All employees can become involved with Community Spirit and a committee has been established to ensure that requests for help are considered fairly and consistently.
Support is provided by:
- Community Spirit leave days
Each year charities are nominated for the Charity of the Year status. Employees are invited to vote for a charitable organisation and the successful candidate will be supported with fundraising activities throughout the year.
Boehringer Ingelheim employees have chosen Naomi House to be Charity of the Year 2008.

Many employees like to take part in an activity or a sponsored event to raise money for a particular organisation. Boehringer Ingelheim actively encourages this and offers financial assistance.
Help is also given by providing Community Spirit leave days to employees. A local school could require someone to listen to children read or an old people's home may need help with decorating or gardening. Employees can use these special leave days to make a real difference to people's lives.
VTI day occurs in April each year and employees able to participate in projects to benefit the community. This could be providing a service, such as helping clean up a local park, or participating in a sponsored activity to raise funds for our Charity of the Year.
Boehringer Ingelheim have an excellent record for recycling. We already recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, metal, glass and electrical equipment and will look to recycle even more in the future. Other materials recycled in smaller quantities include batteries, toner cartridges, oil, electrical equipment and mobile phones. We currently have an overall recycling rate of around 85%.
In manufacturing our medicines we use up to 50,000 litres of water per day; much of it is clean waste. A project has been launched to redistribute it to Local Authorities for watering the town's plants, helping the environment to stay green.
Working closely with our environmental partners, BI (UK) are fast becoming environmental champions reducing waste and increasing awareness amongst our employees and the local community and have recently won an award 'Eco Hero' in the Pride of Bracknell Awards |
