As part of our commitment to embracing economic and social well-being in the countries and communities in which we operate, we are dedicated to addressing social and environmental issues. During 2008, in the UK, we recycled a total of 1151 tons of material, including approximately 888 tonnes of plastic and 135 tons of paper and cardboard which saved around 1800 trees. This does not include the 1000 trees already planted by the company (one for each employee, to celebrate our position in the 2006 Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For).

In 2008 we donated in excess of £30,000 to external charities through our Community Spirit programme.
- Boehringer Ingelheim employees have chosen Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust to be our Charity of the Year 2009. The trust exists to find a cure for childhood and adult Brain Tumours through funding research and to offer support, hope and information to patients and their carers.
