Risk index for COPD developed
Experts from the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research, in collaboration with the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, have developed the new index to help doctors when treating patients with COPD.
Explaining the benefits of the new approach, Milo Puhan, researcher at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said: "Now it will be possible to adjust the treatment according to the underlying risk of mortality, as cardiologists have already done for a long time in patients with cardiovascular disease."
By providing the new risk index, doctors will be able to give more accurate predictions to patients about the risk of death from the illness and help develop strategies that could boost longevity.
COPD covers a range of illnesses that affect the lungs and the disease is common among smokers.
The disease is also prevalent among former mine workers, who have suffered the illness due to the effects of dust building up in their lungs after years of working underground.
