Tiny bubbles 'help tackle stroke'

20 February 2009

Tiny bubbles created by transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound could help to aid patients suffering from stroke, it has been claimed.

Research carried out by the University of Alabama's Comprehensive Stroke Center revealed that the bubbles, combined with the drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is more effective than simply using tPA alone.

"These findings demonstrate that ultrasound combined with microspheres and tPA can be tested further in a pivotal clinical trial with the goal of providing a more effective treatment option for stroke patients," said Andrei Alexandrov, director at the centre.

Speaking at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference, he added: "It's very promising to see such results, which support the potential of this therapy as a more effective and expansive therapy for stroke patients."

He explained that the treatment worked by promoting faster clearing of blocked blood vessels.

Earlier this month, it was claimed that treatment in specialist units could help to reduce the risk of secondary strokes.
