Boehringer Ingelheim donates £20,000 to help the elderly

2 April 2003 – Bracknell-based pharmaceutical company, Boehringer Ingelheim, has donated £20,000 to the Berkshire Community Foundation, a charity which supports voluntary and community groups in Berkshire.

The donation will enable the Berkshire Community Foundation to support more initatives to help the elderly in the county.

The Foundation aims to improve the quality of life of the people of Berkshire by raising funds to support community activity. It pools funds from a wide range of companies, individuals and institutions to support a programme of local grant making. Last year it made grants totalling over £400,000 to 196 groups such as Arthritis Care, Cruse Bereavement, Recycled Teenagers, Sandhurst Day Centre and Bracknell Age Concern.

Robin Draper, Chief Executive of the Berkshire Community Foundation said today:

‘In our recent Community Needs Survey we identified care for the elderly as a key issue facing the county. We are delighted therefore that Boehringer Ingelheim has decided to develop a partnership with the Foundation, with the specific intention of expanding our ability to help older people beyond our current

Blagrave Fund for the Elderly.

As a local employer reaching out to the community, Boehringer Ingelheim is setting a great example to its fellow corporates in ensuring that there is more local giving for local need.’

Dr Thomas Heil, Managing Director of Boehringer Ingelheim said:

‘This year and over coming years we will be looking to do more to support local community activities. The Berkshire Community Foundation will help us do this. The Foundation assists many worthwhile causes in the Berkshire area and makes a real difference to people’s lives. We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with them in helping the local community.’

About Berkshire Community Foundation

LOCAL GIVING FOR LOCAL NEED

The Berkshire Community Foundation is Berkshire’s own charity. It is an independent foundation, raising new funds from a wide spectrum of donors, to create an endowment in support of voluntary activity, to meet the needs and raise the quality of life of the Berkshire people.

The Foundation is a partnership between its donor companies and individuals, the Local Authorities, the Voluntary Sector and the people of Berkshire. It embraces all these in building an endowment to alleviate need in the county. By encouraging people to give locally they can see the benefits, both for themselves and future generations.

Since its inception in 1985 it has made grants totalling £1.21 million to over 1000 local voluntary groups.

It also works with 2-Ten FM with the Give a Child a Chance Appeal and is an Intermediary Body for European Social Fund Global Grants. Under the latter project it will be giving grants worth £600,000 over the 3 years ending December 2003. Additionally it has just updated its Community Needs Survey so as to raise public awareness of the needs that underlie the affluence of our county and thereby raise more funds for the small voluntary groups that tackle that need in our local community.
